‘1883’ Star Sam Elliott Reportedly Joining Cast Of ‘Landman’ For Season 2

According to Puck’s Matthew Belloni, the seasoned cowboy will reunite with show creator Taylor Sheridan on his hit series Landman, which was recently confirmed for a season two.

Paramount+ has officially ordered a second season, and though it doesn’t come as a surprise, fans have been anxiously waiting for a confirmation. Especially after the first season ended with a cameo from Andy Garcia that’s obviously meant to spin into a main character role in the second season.

And while the network hasn’t officially confirmed it yet, you can pretty much bet Elliott will be one of the newest cast members for this upcoming season, joining fan-favorites like Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris, to carry the show in the wake of the death of Monty Miller, played by Jon Hamm, who Belloni reports will not be back for Landman season two:

“Hamm only signed a one-season deal for ‘Landman,; and creator Taylor Sheridan’s plan was always for Demi Moore, who plays Hamm’s wife and was barely in season one of the Paramount+ hit, to become a main character in season two.”

While there are no further details about what Elliott’s character will be on Landman, he formerly appeared on Sheridan’s other hit show 1883 as Shea Brennan, a cowboy leading settlers across the frontier, helping Dutton family make their home and settle in Montana:

“I’m told ‘Landman’ is also adding Sam Elliott as a main character for season two. His scenes with Billy Bob Thornton should be fun.”

it’s no secret that Sheridan likes to use the same actors in all his shows, even Billy Bob Thornton first appeared in 1883 before he was cast as the lead in Landman. They’re both seasoned actors, and I think they’ll have a natural onscreen chemistry that I’m looking forward to watching… aside from a few strange scenes in Landman, and some incredibly unrealistic plot lines, I enjoyed the show, especially with the ending of the Yellowstone series as this one is pretty similar in terms of the drama and unique characters.

Elliott actually won a Screen Actors Guild Award for his work on 1883, and said in his acceptance speech that it was a “gift” to be such a big part of the show:

“I’m gonna treasure this guy, this gal, because it comes from all of you, my brothers and sisters from SAG-AFTRA. I’ll treasure it as a constant reminder of 1883 and what a gift it was for all of us on both sides of the camera.”

Elliott is also known for roles in Tombstone, The Big Lebowski, Road House, Gunsmoke, The Ranch and more.

And speaking of Yellowstone, the spinoff with Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly is currently in the works, and they’re reportedly looking to cast a “Kevin Costner type” to join the show for an unknown, and there’s apparently another spinoff show in the works too, though no further details were provided:

“As for the rest of the Sheridan-verse, he’s planning to shoot the Yellowstone spinoff with Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly this summer (they’re currently looking to cast a Kevin Costner type that is definitely not Costner to join them). Plus, another spinoff is coming together. Plus, new seasons of the existing shows, and Sheridan is writing yet more original stuff. I’ve said this many times, but the Sheridan TV factory is pretty incredible.”

If you thought any of it was slowing down after the ending of their flagship series Yellowstone, think again… it sounds like they’re gearing up to put out even more shows with some very talented actors and plan to keep the Sheridan universe growing and expanding.

And if you haven’t watched Landman yet, I highly recommend it… Billy Bob Thornton is so great. Here’s some of the best moments from season one to get you started:
