1923 has added its first new cast member for season 2. The Paramount+ show is both a spinoff and a prequel to the smash hit neo-western show Yellowstone. Set in the titular year, the show follows the trials and tribulations of a generation of the Dutton family between the timelines of the earlier prequel 1883 and the flagship show, with a star-studded cast that includes Helen Mirren, Harrison Ford, Jerome Flynn, Isabel May, Brian Geraghty, and Timothy Dalton. The upcoming 1923 season 2 was officially renewed in February 2023, midway through the run of season 1.
Per Deadline, Jennifer Carpenter will be joining the cast of 1923 season 2. She will be playing a recurring role in the new season as Mamie Fossett. Her character is described as “a highly capable U.S. Deputy Marshall who serves warrants and makes arrests with confidence ahead of her time.” This marks the first new character to join the returning cast, though it remains to be seen if any further m ajor characters are added as the show prepares to kick off production in the second half of 2024.

Joining the 1923 cast will mark the first time that Jennifer Carpenter has appeared in a Western project. Additionally, it is likely an intimidating prospect to appear opposite screen legends such as Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, who have five Oscar nominations, one win, and more than $7 billion of box office receipts between them. However, over the course of her career, Carpenter has proven many times over that she is capable of blending well with the existing cast of the show.
Carpenter is perhaps best known for her role as the title character’s sister Debra in the serial killer drama Dexter. She was part of the main cast of the eight-season show between 2006 and 2013. Although it took nearly a decade for the show to return to the air, she also appeared in the sequel spinoff Dexter: New Blood when it premiered in 2021. This set a precedent for her grounding new franchise installments that could work well with the upcoming season of the Yellowstone spinoff.
Carpenter has also proved her ability to step into franchises where she was not part of the original cast. This includes performances in titles including the horror remake Quarantine and the animated features Batman: Gotham by Gaslight and Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms. Though it remains to be seen how prominent her recurring 1923 character proves to be, it seems likely that she will be able to make a strong impression in her new role.
