1923 is back, baby, and the Season 2 premiere may have just given us answers to one of the most pressing questions in the Duttonverse: who are John Dutton III’s grandparents?
Taylor Sheridan‘s universe has expanded so much that fans have started looking past the cowboys and cattle to ask the real questions. And, really, most of them revolve around the Dutton family tree and the gaps therein.
So far, we’ve had Yellowstone, 1923, and 1883. And there’s more on the way with 1944 and the Beth and Rip spinoff in development. The Dutton line is only continuing to grow, for better or worse.
But that only makes things more complicated when it comes to understanding this lengthy legacy. The one thing fans have wanted confirmation on for years is how 1923 connects to John Dutton III (Kevin Costner.)
Alexandra in 1923 is likely John Dutton’s grandmother
1923 Season 2 Episode 1 dropped a lot of bombshells. There’s mountain lions prowling the ranch house, Spencer joins a fight club to fund his way home, and Teonna is still on the run. But the biggest revelation by far was that Alexandra is officially pregnant.
Her pregnancy became a big fan theory going into Season 2 thanks to some well-placed sea sickness. In the newest episode, she confirms the news to her best friend, Jennifer, telling her she’s “running out of time” to get to Montana.
Indeed, Alex is going to have to move fast if she wants to get back to Spencer before the baby comes.
Thankfully, she gets started by the end of the first episode, boarding a ship to New York and beginning her journey. Now, we can almost be certain that she and Spencer’s child is John Dutton II, father to Kevin Costner’s John.
This makes the most sense. In Season 1, it looked like Jack and Liz might be the parents-to-be after she became pregnant. However, she suffered a miscarriage not long after, and that cleared the family tree once again.
Alex’s pregnancy also makes sense if you look at the Yellowstone finale, where the Dutton prophecy finally comes true. It was confirmed that Tate had been the seventh generation of Dutton since James in 1883. Which, of course, means Spencer and Alex would have to be the ones carrying on the bloodline.
Of course, this could be a red herring. There’s still the question of whether Alex is having a boy or a girl. Gender reveal party, anyone?
