Once again, Hollywood stars gathered at The Beverly Hilton in California for the 81st Golden Globes, to mark the astonishing work of those in front and behind the cameras over the past year.

From celebrating big box hit films such as Oppenheimer and Barbie, to individuals like Beef’s Ali Wong and Succession’s Kieran Culkin, it was certainly a night to remember.

Among those in attendance was actress America Ferrera and Costner who were paired together to present the award for best actress in a musical or comedy series.

Even though actress Emma Stone won the accolade for her performance in Poor Things, it was Costner and Ferrera’s interaction beforehand which got CBS viewers talking.

Ferrera began by telling Costner how she is “such a fan” of his and spoke of a memorable scene from The Bodyguard which he starred in with late singer Whitney Houston.

The 68-year-old then says there’s a scene of hers that he loves and when asked which one he is referring to, Costner says the “The Barbie movie.”

“It’s literally impossible to be a woman,” he replied.

“You’re so beautiful, you’re so smart, and it kills me that you don’t think you’re good enough. Th at was pretty good.”

Ferrera, clearly taken aback, questioned: “Did you, Kevin Costner, memorize my monologue about womanhood from Barbie?”
He continued: “No. But it’s an important message and it always serves to remind me what’s possible in film.

“Just reminds me when we take our time, when we manage to get it right, when film is working at it’s very best, it can be about moments you’ll never ever forget, a look, a touch, a kiss, a speech, and you just had one of those moments.

“And all the actors nominated tonight know the power of writing that they’ve been gifted with and they have the chance to live forever.”

Ferrera then joked: “Wow. So you’re not going to do the rest of my monologue right now on national television?”

To which he stumbled: “Maybe later.” Then throughout their interaction, there was awkward laughter coming from the star-studded audience.

When the camera showed some of the guests, there were a number of celebrities who didn’t look as amused, including Meryl Streep and Hannah Waddingham.

Reacting to the moment on X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan wrote: “The most excruciating, awkward moment in recent TV memory. Poor Kevin Costner.”

Another joked: “The top nominee for oddest acting legend who can’t even pretend to be normal while giving away two awards at the #goldenglobes is…Kevin Costner.

“(He needs some notes from Harrison Ford on how to be lovably crusty.)”

A third questioned if he was “drunk” while a fellow viewer posted: “Dear Kevin Costner: That was painful. Wow.”

“Someone please save America Ferrera from Kevin Costner who apparently just woke up?” wrote another.

The Golden Globes 2024 is available to watch on CBS and Paramount+.
