If you’re in need of a Clint Eastwood fix, you’d better act fast, dear reader. The crime thriller The Mule, which Eastwood directs and stars in, is slated to leave the Netflix platform on June 16th.
The flick garnered mostly positive reviews upon its initial release in 2018, achieving an approval rating of 70% from film critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 66%. Not too shabby.
The Mule is a gritty crime thriller that features an all-star cast of characters and a harrowing narrative. In addition to Eastwood in the lead role, the film also features appearances by Bradley Cooper, Michael Peña, Laurence Fishburne, Taissa Farmiga, and Robert LaSardo.
Nick Schenk (Gran Torino) penned the screenplay. Interestingly, the scribe took real-life inspiration for the script from a New York Times article titled “The Sinaloa Cartel’s 90-Year-Old Drug Mule” by Sam Dolnick.
For anyone unfamiliar with the film, the setup goes like this: Broke, alone, and facing foreclosure on his business, 90-year-old horticulturist Earl Stone (Eastwood) takes a job as a drug courier for a Mexican cartel. His immediate success leads to easy money and a larger shipment that soon draws the attention of hard-charging DEA agent Colin Bates (Cooper). When Earl’s past mistakes start to weigh heavily on his conscience, he must decide whether to right those wrongs before law enforcement and cartel thugs catch up to him.
