Kevin Costner Says The ‘Yellowstone’ Story Isn’t Finished, Implies That Taylor Sheridan Should Continue Writing Next Chapter

Should the Dutton story continue? John Dutton himself seems to think so.

Over the past two years, there has been no shortage of Kevin Costner vs Yellowstone stories, and ultimately, it all amounted to a finale season of the show that won’t feature its biggest star. After a two year hiatus… it’s honestly quite the letdown.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll tune in this fall to see how Season 5 Part 2 wraps up, but we’ve seen a number of comments and replies from fans who have given up on the show. Even when I post this blog I’m undoubtedly going to get a slew of “who still watches that?” and “I’m not watching with Costner” comments.

But despite what some may perceive as bad blood, Costner says he hopes the story continues on (there has been rumors of a modern-day spinoff series as well as a potential Season 6 that focuses on Rip and Beth). He almost makes it sounds like he would entertain starring in some kind of spinoff series down the road.

In a red carpet conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Costner says the story is not finished:

“That’s been a wonderful part of my life, making Yellowstone, and who knows, sometimes things have a way of circling back. I haven’t seen that dust trail coming towards me and I’ve always been open to what I started. Five seasons was a lot for us to do, and I think that story is not finished.”

He went on to point out that you can always continue the story with the next generation, which Taylor Sheridan has done a good job with in his various prequel shows:

“I don’t know… obviously they can go on, have children, so make the story about them.”

Of course, a new spinoff series starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell, and Suits star Patrick J. Adams, The Madison, has officially been green-lit, so who knows where that will intersect with the Yellowstone storyline. Other spinoffs have been rumored for years so it all remains to be seen… could Costner cameo in some random spinoff series down the road? Or could he cameo in the green-lit 1994 prequel series? I guess we’ll find out soon…

In the meantime, Yellowstone returns for its series finale on November 10th, on Paramount Network:
