The Fate Of The Duttons — C&I’s Yellowstone Season 5B Updates

So, what can we expect when Yellowstone returns on November 10 for its long-delayed Season 5B? And before you say the conspicuous absence of Kevin Costner as paterfamilias John Dutton, who left the show to pursue his Horizon dreams consider: Executive producer and series co-creator Taylor Sheridan is famous (if not notorious) for springing surprises on viewers. It may not seem likely at this point, but who’s to say he and Costner haven’t secretly cooked up something truly shocking — like, maybe, an on-screen death scene?

What Does Beth Dutton Have Up Her Sleeve?

Both Kelly Reilly (Beth) and Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler) reportedly have signed on for an unexpected Season 6 of Yellowstone — see what I mean by surprises? — so it’s reasonably safe to assume their characters will survive well past the final episode of Season 5B. But exactly what will Beth do to neutralize the threat posed to her, her father, and the Yellowstone ranch itself by adopted brother Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley)? She can’t blackmail him anymore — not after he revealed to her that he isn’t the only member of the Dutton clan who’s been dumping inconvenient corpses in a secluded stretch of Wyoming. The Season 5A finale indicated murder may be on her mind.

Does Jamie Survive?

As of this writing, there’s been no word yet as to whether Wes Bentley also will be in the mix for Season 6. So, it’s possible that Jamie will be eliminated by Beth. But the aforementioned trailer suggested he won’t go down without a fight. “You destroy me,” he barks at Beth, “you destroy yourself.” Jamie has quite a few beans that he — and/or slinky co-conspirator Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) — can spill. And it should be noted that the trailer showed FBI agents hustling boxes of documents (or beans) out of somebody’s office.

What Happens To John Dutton?

The Season 5A finale had Jamie, in his role as Montana Attorney General, launching an impeachment probe of his father, John Dutton, the state’s governor. A few scenes later, however, Jamie and Sarah discussed the possibility of Dutton not merely being removed from office but being removed, period. (Sarah promised to handle the hiring of murderous “professionals” while Jamie maintained “plausible deniability.”) So, what’ll it be? John gets so stressed out by impeachment proceedings that he dies of a heart attack? Or will he be offed by assassins? Or does Taylor Sheridan have an entirely different plan to write John out of the picture, to explain his absence right at the start of Season 5B?

Stay tuned for further developments.
