The Yellowstone characters are either Team Beth or Team Jamie heading into season 5, part 2. The war between the siblings will define the final installment of Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western epic about the Dutton family, especially now that Kevin Costner will officially not return as John Dutton. It’s unclear how Yellowstone season 5, part 2 will handle Costner’s departure, especially with John serving as the current Governor of Montana. Still, there are plenty of stories to tell concerning Beth (Kelly Reilly), Jamie (Wes Bentley), and the rest of the Yellowstone season 5 cast.
Beth and Jamie officially declare war in Yellowstone season 5, part 1 finale. After Jamie calls for John’s impeachment, Beth breaks into Jamie’s home and demands that he step down. However, Jamie defies Beth, telling her the blackmail was useless because the “Train Station” where he dumped his father’s body is also where John took the people he killed. No longer able to control her brother, Beth suggests killing him in the part 1 finale, while Jamie comes to the conclusion that he should take Beth out. Beth and Jamie’s sibling rivalry could, therefore, end in death.
Beth Dutton
Team Beth
Beth supports her side in Yellowstone season 5, and the character never falters in helping her father and the loyal members of the Dutton family tree. Beth is a fierce character who has gone up against Jamie countless times and wins. However, the one instance in which Jamie tricked Beth is the catalyst for the animosity between the siblings. When they were kids, Beth came to Jamie to help her secure an abortion, and the brother signed off on the procedure despite knowing it would sterilize his sister and prevent her from having children.
Beth’s contempt for her brother is understandable when she witnessed first-hand how self-serving and heartless he can be. Beth is a person who fights hard for the people she loves, making it heartbreaking that she can’t have a family with Rip (Cole Hauser). Heading into season 5, part 2, Beth is still fighting to protect her family’s ranch despite her disagreements with her father over the best way to do that, including contesting John’s business model. Even if something happens to John, Beth’s priorities are the ranch and her family.
Rip Wheeler
Team Beth
Devoutly loyal to the Dutton Ranch and his wife Beth, Rip is obviously Team Beth heading into season 5, part 2. Rip has been on the ranch since he was just a kid, taken in by John after his father beat his mother to death, and he killed his father in retaliation. Rip has made it abundantly clear that the ranch is his home and he will do anything to protect it, his loyalty exemplified by the Yellowstone brand he has worn since he was young. Arguably, no one has done more daily to protect the Yellowstone than Rip.
Rip will support Beth in her mission to preserve the ranch because that’s his priority, too. Rip is a great person to have in one’s corner because he is a brutal fighter and always has a plan. Still, Beth may not get much help from Rip in part 2, at least not at first, since he is heading to the Texas panhandle to care for the herd in the part 1 finale. While Beth can handle herself, Rip will hopefully come back to support her.
Kayce Dutton
Team Beth
Kayce (Luke Grimes) is also Team Beth in Yellowstone season 5, part 2. Jamie is Kayce and Beth’s adopted brother; Kayce went as far as to support Jamie him even after his father and Beth grew skeptical of him, but he will ultimately vouch for his sister. Beth and Kayce both want to support their father and the ranch, even if Kayce sometimes doesn’t know how to help.
Ultimately, Kayce and Jamie would have benefited the most from the inheriting ranch since they both have children to whom they can pass it down. Jamie has squandered that opportunity, leaving Kayce as the sole heir to the ranch. Tate’s father will no doubt side with his sister when it comes to the Yellowstone’s future, which could include helping her take down their brother, as Kayce will be close by at the ranch.
Jamie Dutton
Team Jamie
While Jamie is still supporting his father in some form when season 5 opens, he officially turns against his adoptive family in the season 5, part 1 finale. In part 1, Jamie was targeted by Market Equities after they saw him looking somber at his father’s victory rally for the governor’s race. Jamie, the attorney general for the state of Montana, wanted the governor’s office when it was up for grabs, but John didn’t trust him in the office (and his instinct was right). Still, Jamie impeaches his former father figure after John pulls the funds for the airport.
Jamie killed his biological father in the season 4 finale, who otherwise would have been available to help his son take the Duttons down.
Jamie got the vote he needed to impeach John; still, his power is limited. Jamie has been consulting with a key litigator at Market Equities, and if he loses his favor with the company, or they find a way to work around him, then he has no one to back up his fight. The mother of Jamie’s child, who is also his former campaign manager, turned against him despite allowing him to have a relationship with his son. Moreover, Jamie kills his biological father in the season 4 finale, who otherwise would have been available to help his son take the Duttons down.
John Dutton
Team Beth
Even John turns on his son, and it is hard to blame him after Jamie threatens his office and entire way of life. Despite all of Jamie’s transgressions, John still considers Jamie a son for much of the Yellowstone timeline. However, in season 5, part 1, John tells Summer that Kayce is “his only son.” The comment clarifies that John will no longer help Jamie or see him as family. While he was willing to give Jamie the benefit of the doubt for a while, those days are over.
Even though Kevin Costner has left Yellowstone, his story can continue as the governor is going to Helena in the part 1 finale. While John’s story could continue off-screen, he still won’t be supporting Jamie again. After he learned there was a vote to impeach him, John told Lynelle that Jamie’s betrayal exemplified why he took the governor’s role, as he didn’t trust Jamie with that much power. While the father’s instincts paid off, he stood by Jamie for longer than he should have.
Monica Dutton
Team Beth
Monica Long Dutton (Kelsey Asbille) is also Team Beth as Yellowstone comes to a close, aligning her with her husband Kayce. While the sisters-in-law have drastically different approaches to life and communication, they both aim to protect the Dutton family. For instance, the team leader is willing to fight for her sister-in-law in her (Beth) and Monica’s boutique scene. Monica would likewise fight to defend her sister if it came to that.
Additionally, in an interview with TV Insider, actor Kelsey Asbille said Monica will be Team Beth in Yellowstone season 5, part 2. It’s not a huge surprise, considering Monica generally supports her husband, who wants to uphold the ranch just like his sister. While Monica and Beth have different philosophies, they are bonded in their fight for the land.
Sarah Atwood
Team Jamie
Sarah (Dawn Olivieri) is one of the few members of Team Jamie heading into the final Yellowstone chapter. The Market Equities heavy hitter is called in to control the situation after the company’s deal with the state fell through. To influence Jamie and save her company the billions they invested in the airport and Paradise Valley project, Sarah initiates a relationship with him. With this proximity, the litigator consults Jamie on his impeachment inquiry. They agree that the Dutton ranch needs the airport revenue to survive, and she vows to help Jamie save the ranch and become governor.
Sarah is Jamie’s sole ally in part 2; he will have difficulty fighting if he loses her. In the Yellowstone season 5, part 2 trailer, Jamie and Sarah fight, with the latter noting that she has risked everything. It’s unclear if Sarah’s feelings for Jamie are genuine; while it seems unlikely given what she was called to do, the two have grown quite close. Sarah could continue their relationship to leverage his influence if Jamie became governor, but it seems unlikely the series will go in a direction where Jamie prevails.
Lynelle Perry
Team Beth
Governor Lynelle Perry (Wendy Moniz) has supported Jamie at many turns in Yellowstone. She helped him run for Montana attorney general and even wanted to endorse his run for governor. Still, Lynelle fiercely supports John and his way of life since she also comes from a ranching family and knows what he’s fighting for. Therefore, Lynelle is likely Team Beth in Yellowstone season 5, part 2.
While Lynelle and Beth haven’t always seen eye to eye in Yellowstone, the senator is one of the few people not intimidated by Beth. Still, they have been at odds a few times, like when Beth mourned the anniversary of her mother’s passing by taking a bath on the lawn — which is also one of Beth’s best moments in Yellowstone. Still, Lynelle and Beth both support John, so Lynelle will be for Beth in part 2, completing her much longer roster than the one for Team Jamie.
