Despite the fame and acclaim it brought her son, Kevin Costner’s mother disapproved of Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western drama, Yellowstone.
Taylor Sheridan has had an impeccable career trajectory, from being a broke and struggling actor to one of the most famous television creators. Sheridan, in a short amount of time, has gone on to receive critical acclaim from his films like Sicario and creating several critically well-acclaimed TV series.
But what really solidified his position was Yellowstone. While the Western drama might be the best revered of his works, there is one person who did not like it as much: Kevin Costner’s mother.
Kevin Costner’s mother is not fond of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone
Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone debuted back in 2018 and since then the neo-Western drama has gone on to become no less than a television phenomenon. Drawing millions of views each season, the show has been the cornerstone of Sheridan’s talent.
However, not everyone is fond of the show, and surprisingly Kevin Costner‘s mother is one of them. Costner, whose career received a new lease of life with the drama, revealed in an interview that his mother dislikes the show’s strong language.
My dad kept saying don’t know how to find this Kevin… I don’t like how you’re behaving in either, you’re mother is not very happy with the language.. most of people here in assisted living don’t wanna watch it.
In an appearance on The Rick Eisen Show, Costner stated that since the show was on Paramount, not many knew how to tune in to the show. Moreover, while his mother disliked the colorful language, his father was not impressed by how his character, John Dutton conducted himself in the show. This is yet again surprising since it was Costner’s inclusion and character that made the show as big as it is today.
How did Kevin Costner’s departure affect Yellowstone?
Kevin Costner was the main draw of Yellowstone when the series debuted, starring as the Dutton family patriarch John Dutton. So when he left the show, it left an undeniable impact on the show’s trajectory, influencing both its storyline and ultimate conclusion.
Citing scheduling conflicts and creative differences as the reason for his departure (via Deadline), his character met a dramatic end in season 5 of the show, a move that not only shocked fans but also seemed to have accelerated the series’ conclusion. However, the rumors of a feud between Taylor Sheridan and Costner seemed to have linked these plot choices as an outcome of the alleged feud.
While there is no way possible to determine the same, fans and observers believe that the killing of John Dutton might be a response to the real-life alleged rift between the two. Yet, even in Costner’s absence, it helped reshape the narrative to a satisfying end, even when some fans would rather refer to it as a ‘disaster.’
