Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe expands with the second season of 1923 and in true Sheridan fashion, is rumored to have multiple deaths.
Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone aired its series finale late last year without its lead star Kevin Costner. However, the story of the Duttons is far from over as several spinoffs seem to be in the works. While Sheridan was seemingly busy with his next Western Landman, he also reportedly worked on season 2 of the prequel series 1923, which is set to air in February.
The first season of the Harrison Ford starrer ended with the tease of an oncoming war on the Duttons’ ranch. Several deaths have been predicted by fans, including some major characters that have become fan favorites. However, one rumored death in the series is more heartbreaking than Costner’s in its flagship show.

While it was popularized by Game of Thrones, the shocking death of a fan-favorite character trope was also perfected by Taylor Sheridan in his shows, especially Yellowstone. The writer-showrunner has offed many beloved characters without as much as a blink of an eye in the neo-Western. He even wrote off Kevin Costner in Yellowstone amidst their clashes.
Now that Yellowstone has ended, Sheridan seems to be concentrating on the numerous spinoffs that have been rumored to be in development. A spinoff focused on Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser’s characters, a Four Sixes-based show, and a sequel titled The Madison are all in various stages of development. The first one, however, will be 1923 season 2.
The first season of the Yellowstone prequel ended with Donald Whitefield expressing his intention to take the ranch into his own custody to the Duttons, teasing an impending war. The setting gives way to plenty of deaths in the sophomore season.
While some supporting characters are bound to go, a fan on Reddit has predicted Harrison Ford or Helen Mirren’s characters to also kick the bucket in the second season.
We can certainly expect a lot of death and maiming in Season 2 of 1923. Since this is a Taylor Sheridan production, it’s likely to include an unexpected and/or major characters…If I had to pick one, it would be Jacob. Cara dying might be the TS curve ball we have come to expect though. This will be a final episode death.
The prospect of losing either Jacob or Cara Dutton is heartbreaking for fans as the lead characters of its flagship show were also not free from threats. One can only hope that Taylor Sheridan gives it better treatment than Kevin Costner’s in Yellowstone.
Actor Brandon Sklenar teases that the ending of 1923 will be ‘agonizing’
In 1923, Brandon Sklenar plays Spencer Dutton, the adopted son of Jacob and Cara who is in Africa after serving in World War I. He is asked to return by his mother to protect the ranch and at the end of season one, he is en route to Montana along with his love Alexandra. While he is a powerful presence, even he is not free from death in Taylor Sheridan’s world.
Sklenar spoke about the upcoming season in an interview with Esquire and hinted at an agonizing end to the series, especially for the fans. He said,
It’s going to hurt. Just from an audience standpoint, from a fan standpoint…. Yeah, it’s agonizing. It’s going to fire people up to be counting the days till the second part airs.
This just hints at a possible important death, maybe even Spencer’s in the upcoming season. All fans can hope is it is not as drab as the series finale of Yellowstone.
