1923 Season 2’s New Character Played By Jennifer Carpenter Revealed In Exclusive Episode 2 Video

1923 season 2 may have spent its premiere episode catching up with old favorites as they brave the bitter Winter, but episode 2 is ready to introduce some new characters. The most prominent is perhaps U.S. Deputy Marshall Mamie Fossett, and ScreenRant has an exclusive first look at her introduction, which showcases her nerves of steel. Played by Jennifer Carpenter (best known for her role as Deb Morgan on Dexter), Mamie patrols the Comanche Nation and chooses to lead with respect rather than fear.

1923’s newest character enters the scene by way of Oklahoma, to where Marshall Kent (Jamie McShane) and Father Renaud (Sebastian Roché) believe they have tracked Teonna Rainwater and her so-called gang. Little do they know that she, her father, and Pete Plenty Clouds have made their way to Texas instead — a happy accident that has kept them out of harm’s way for now. That being said, there is no doubt their paths will cross again, as the season 2 trailer highlights Spencer Dutton (who is currently in Galveston) crossing paths with Deputy Marshall Fossett.

ScreenRant’s exclusive clip from 1923 season 2, episode 2, gruesomely titled “The Rapist is Winter”, sees her face off for the first time against Kent and Renaud. While it is a battle of wits rather than one with guns, there is no doubt she comes away the victor. Watch the clip below and read on for our analysis.

Mamie Fossett Leaves A Strong First Impression In 1923 Season 2
The Deputy Marshall’s Introductory Scene Leaves High Hopes For Her Future Arc

The first thing that stands out in the scene is how calm and measured Mamie is in her responses, clipped though they may be. Marshall Kent’s dismissive tone has struck a nerve, but she lays out her threats in plain language without immediately resorting to violence or growing emotional. Taylor Sheridan has delighted audiences with all manner of strong female characters in his shows, whether they fall into the well-known archetype or carve their own space outside of the mold, and Mamie seems like she will be another welcome addition.

She sees Kent and Renaud out with an important warning, advising him that “Comanche only respect that badge if it respects them back.” She’s absolutely right to point out that her territory is not Montana, but 1923 season 2 has only scratched the surface of how deadly things can get for the White Man wanderers if they continue to disrespect the environment and its people. At the moment, Mamie seems none too pleased about having to help them on their quest, but time will tell if she is true to word when it comes to respecting the Native Americans under her jurisdiction.

Where Will Season 2’s Story Take Mamie Fossett Next?
Fans Are Eagerly Awaiting Her Run-In With Spencer

Carpenter was vague when ScreenRant asked about how Mamie and Spencer’s stories would intersect, but she summed up the show’s rich dynamics succinctly with: “One thing that Taylor [Sheridan] does an extraordinary job of is building these beautiful planets with every character, and then sometimes their orbits intersect.”

With her introduction as a heroic badass in episode 2, it only seems fitting that she and Spencer would team up as like-minded spirits. But Carpenter cautioned against betting too much on that either, “You know who Spencer is, and you know what his legacy is… But I don’t.” If they’re not allies, they may be victims of a misunderstanding that prevents Spencer from making it home as quickly as he’d like, which would certainly spice up the storyline but add to the viewers’ frustrations. Either way, it’ll be exciting to see who Mamie interacts with and how she treats them as season 2 progresses.
