Well, we’re halfway through the second, and more importantly final season of Paramount’s 1923, and as we told you from the beginning… it’s gonna be a LONG time before Spencer Dutton gets back home to Montana. And fans have had enough…
I can’t say that you weren’t warned though…
If you saw 1923 Season 1 on Paramount+, you already know that Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), the handsome and adventurous son of James Dutton (Tim McGraw’s character in the first Yellowstone prequel series 1883), has spent his time hunting in Africa following his service to the United States military in World War I. Always drinking, he essentially needs to find ways to make his life exciting (and simultaneously escape reality) following the war, and is hired in Kenya to hunt leopards that are attacking people at this fancy safari place. He meets Alexandra, they fall in love, yada yada, but the big part of Spencer’s story as it relates to the overall Dutton family is that… he’s not there. They’re in Montana trying to fend off these attacks from Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) and Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton), and Spencer is overseas. Granted, he spend half the first season trying to get back home, and then is separated from his new wife, Alexandra, at the end of the season.
Now that Season 2 is here, fans have made it VERY clear that they want Spencer to get back to Montana quickly, and join the rest of his family for the bulk of Season 2. Fans do NOT want Spencer to spend all of Season 2 still trying to get back to Montana on what is essentially a side plot. But we know based on the previously released episode descriptions that Spencer might not arrive back to Montana until episode 7, the penultimate episode of the entire series (remember 1923 is only supposed to be 2 seasons).
I’ll say that again because it seems like people are expecting a 3rd season…. 1923 is only set to run for 2 seasons.
After the first couple episodes, fans sounded off on Taylor Sheridan for dragging the story along, but now that we’re halfway through the season, they’re downright angry. After the 4th episode, titled “Journey the Rivers of Iron” fans took to Instagram to share their outrage in the comments.

Sooooooo Sloooowwwww
You guys really know how to drag this out. Funk this show
BORED TO DEATH! How many episodes can and seasons of the same stuff does the audience have to take.
This is ridiculous. Let’s spend the entire second season getting home from Africa. Let’s just destroy the series!
At this point why even watch? Nothing changes
The whole season so far can really be one episode!
When Spencer gets home the series is going to be over because it will have been canceled 3 years ago.
If this doesn’t pick up tonight I may stop watching. Too slow
I am about to give up on this show. It is dragging on.
I can’t take it anymore… how long until my boy gets home
You guys are seriously dragging this, it’s getting old. Just get Spencer home!
It’s getting ridiculous how much you are dragging out spencer and Alex getting to Montana it’s been 1.5 seasons
Unless there will be a season 3 you’d better move faster so dragging this on!!!
Unless we get a curveball, there won’t be…

Yeesh…
To be honest, I’m enjoying the season so far, but perhaps that’s just because my expectations were that he wouldn’t be getting home until the end of the series. But as the saying goes, “it’s not about the destination, it’s the journey” and I think that’s the crux of 1923 in many ways. As Taylor Sheridan has always said regarding his Yellowstone prequels, “it’s a peek through a window in time.” Taylor isn’t interested in telling the Dutton’s entire story… he’s interested in specific glimpses into pivotal moments in the family legacy, and in the early 20s, Spencer Dutton’s journey home is a cornerstone of the story. I’m not making excuses… I’d probably prefer Spencer to get home sooner rather than later as well, but I’m not hating the plot so far.
I mean, regardless of the Spencer Dutton saga, this is WAY better than the final season of Yellowstone, right? Only time will tell, but if you’re waiting for Spencer to get back to Montana… I hate to tell you that he ain’t even close… don’t tell me you weren’t warned.
