Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg gives an optimistic update on the show’s future ahead of the planned series finale. It’s been confirmed that the long-running police procedural will return for its final episodes on Friday, October 18 at 10 PM ET on CBS, with the Blue Bloods season 14 finale planned for December. But with an announced Blue Bloods spinoff in the works, there is some hope that the saga of the Reagan family isn’t finished for good.

Now, a clip of Wahlberg’s performance during a New Kids on the Block concert was shared to Instagram, in which the actor and singer teased that his time as Danny Reagan may continue beyond Blue Bloods.

Wahlberg did not provide any specifics during the impromptu, on-stage Q&A. But he did suggest that there are things in the works as it relates to the future of the CBS show. Read the full quote below:

“Well, we filmed the apparent last season of Blue Bloods, and it’ll air starting in October. Maybe there’ll be something else after that. I don’t know anything officially yet, but there’s things in the works. So maybe something awesome will happen.”

Could Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan Return In The Blue Bloods Spinoff?
It Would Be A Familiar Approach For CBS

Wahlberg does not go into any specifics, but he could be referring to the Blue Bloods spinoff that was announced by Paramount Global co-CEO Brian Robbins. Paramount, which owns CBS, sees the police procedural as a valuable title, and Robbins mentioned that a new Blue Bloods show was being developed alongside the confirmed expansions of other popular Paramount franchises like Dexter. Since then, however, other executives have clarified that this new show is still in the very early stages of development and that the focus is on Blue Bloods season 14.

It could be the case that the new show revolves around Wahlberg’s Danny in some way. The veteran performer has been very open about his feelings over Blue Bloods coming to an end and has pushed for CBS to renew the procedural. Although that does not seem to be in the cards, a prequel spinoff set both in the past and present could continue not only Danny’s story, but other main characters as well.

That wouldn’t be a new approach for CBS. Even though it’s a top-rated show for the network and has consistently brought in ratings, long-running shows cost more as they increase in seasons. The cast and producers of Blue Bloods already took a pay cut to ensure that season 14 would happen. From the perspective of CBS and Paramount at least, as they’re looking to cut costs, a spinoff would be cheaper to produce than a hypothetical season 15.
