The Dollars trilogy directed by Sergio Leone ushered in a new era of Westerns after the era of John Ford and John Wayne’s films. The franchise also was where people started noticing Clint Eastwood. In the three films A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Eastwood played The Man With No Name, which became one of the most iconic characters in film history.
The films led to significant interest in the Western genre and Eastwood himself having learned from his master helped create some iconic Westerns of his own. Now, it has been reported by Deadline that a remake of A Fistful of Dollars is in development. The remake will be a joint American-Italian co-production.
Lately, Hollywood has been leaning heavily toward legacy films and trying to create reboots/sequels of these classic films. Fans are getting tired of this strategy and are criticizing the lack of original content. Eastwood and Leone created something special with the trilogy and fans wouldn’t want anybody ruining the legacy of the beloved franchise. However, Hollywood is currently on a disappointing streak of reboots and remakes (a remake of Eastwood’s The Gauntlet was also recently reported). It is not that surprising that they are now looking at maybe re-creating the whole trilogy starting with this remake first.
Sergio Leone Was Perfect For Clint Eastwood In The Most Unexpected Way
Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood made the Dollars trilogy during the 60s. However, the two individuals did not know each other’s languages (Leone was Italian, and Eastwood was American) and it looked impossible to work together on set. While Eastwood claims that it was insane working under those conditions, he found it to be perfect and creatively fulfilling.
In an interview with Empire, Eastwood stated that they both bonded through their love of John Ford and his Westerns. However, Leone had a very different approach than Ford and had no restrictions whatsoever. The director was not caged by the existing conventions of a Western and did anything he wanted which Eastwood found to be different and liberating. The Dirty Harry star said,
Sergio was terrific for me. I was this young man, having done three years on Rawhide, with an Italian director who spoke no English. I thought it was insanity and that insanity was intriguing for me. I was a big fan of John Ford, and Sergio was too, but his approach was so different: he had no restrictions, he’d kind of go off and do what he wanted even if it was somewhat satirical. It was certainly different from me.
The Dollars trilogy became their career-defining work and catapulted Eastwood’s star power in the industry.
