Yellowstone drama may have made Kevin Costner into some antagonistic character but the cast loved working with him

All the Yellowstone drama has turned Kevin Costner into some sort of anti-hero figure among fans. Costner’s issues have caused some serious damage to the reputation of the TV series that saw its biggest overnight launch for the fifth-season premiere in November 2022. The second part of the fifth season will start filming soon, probably without Costner to lead the show. Yellowstone co-stars have revealed his gentler side over the years which tells a different story from the current drama.

Costner plays John Dutton, the patriarch of the Dutton family and the owner of the Yellowstone ranch. Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, and Luke Grimes play his three children, while Cole Hauser plays his ranch hand in the Paramount series.

Yellowstone Co-Stars Earlier Had A Few Good Words To Share About Kevin Costner

Kevin Costner‘s reputation has been on a downward graph ever since issues between him and Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan started to surface. The Dances with Wolves actor left production of the fifth season in last May and is not expected to return for the season finale. While his co-stars may have a few issues with him over his unexpected exit, they had only good things to say about Costner while their working relationship lasted.

Luke Grimes, who played Kayce Dutton, shared that Costner, who plays his father, was a friendly figure on set. The Bodyguard actor would invite Grimes to hang around his trailer during production, where there would be a fire pit and Costner would sing him a song with his guitar. Grimes shared that Costner took the pressure off of him during filming. Grimes told the New York Post:

“He’s got a fire pit, and he’s a musician, so he’s always got a guitar around and won’t hesitate to play you a song. He does a really good job of taking the pressure off what a huge icon he is.”

John Dutton’s badass daughter Beth Dutton was played by Kelly Reilly in the series. Reilly shared that she and Costner had been working together for years and had a fun relationship between them. She called the Man of Steel actor the “nicest” and “most generous” person she had worked with. She shared with Looper:

“He’s honestly one of the nicest, most generous actors I’ve worked with. We get on so well and we have this real fun relationship—I just love what he does. I could watch him all day. I’m learning a lot from him.”

Cole Hauser plays Rip Wheeler, John Dutton’s ranch hand in the series. Hauser shared with Fox News that Costner surprised him as he was a human being on set before an actor or a creative soul. Hauser revealed that he learned about “just being a gentleman on set and just a class act” from Costner.

Piper Perabo, who played John Dutton’s romantic interest Summer Higgins, also shared that she talked about music bands and movies with the actor. She told TV Guide, “It’s just pretty fun to hang out with Kevin Costner.” It appeared that everyone seemed to love Costner on the set.

Yellowstone Cast Reportedly Gave Kevin Costner The Cold Shoulder Treatment

According to an insider source, Kevin Costner’s ‘betrayal’ did not sit well with the main cast members. The source told Life & Style that these actors did not want anything to do with Costner. The source also shared that Costner was a little hurt by the rejection from his co-stars. The source shared with Life & Style:

“He used to hear from Cole and the rest of the gang — but they’ve cut him loose in the months since he walked away from the show. They’re making no effort to see him and don’t get excited when he calls. After all that praise, you can imagine Kevin being a little hurt by their rejection. He’s getting the cold shoulder treatment. It’s a kick in the teeth.”

Luke Grimes shared in a recent interview with The Independent that Costner’s exit from the show was “unfortunate if it’s changed anything about how the show is going to unfold.” He shared that he understood how Costner would want to involve more in his passion project, Horizon.
