Luke Grimes Says His Newborn Son Is Shaping His New Music: “Biggest Influence In My Life Right Now”

Luke Grimes is already working on his next record.

The Yellowstone actor turned country artist has captured the hearts of fans over the last year since beginning a music career. Making that switch is no easy task, but Luke met with some of the best songwriters in the business and dropped his self-titled debut record this spring, which the legendary Dave Cobb produced.

Growing up as a pastor’s kid, he wasn’t allowed to listen to Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Johnny Cash’s music. These days, he can’t get enough of the legends from the past, but he also likes Colter Wall, Paul Cauthen, and Ruston Kelly. Grimes drew inspiration from these artists when curating his debut project; you can feel these influences in the sound and lyrics.

While Yellowstone fans are focused on watching him on their TV every Sunday night right now, Grimes is still keeping his nose to the grindstone when it comes to his music, thinking about what’s in store for his next record.

Last week, before he graced the stage at the Grand Ole Opry for the first time, Grimes sat down with People Magazine and told the publication that the recent birth of his song is “heavily” inspiring the music he is working on.

“Man, having my baby has changed everything in every way possible. I think people talk about your heart expanding a little bit every day, and it’s so true.

It’s like there’s a love growing inside of me that I didn’t know I was capable of, and it’s incredible and it’s scary because you have so much more skin in the game. You know what I mean? That’s the biggest influence in my life right now.”

Grimes also told the publication that he feels the birth of his song has brought him and his wife, Bianca, closer together. While Grimes hopes that he does not get too sappy with the songwriting about his feelings toward his family’s newest addition, he feels like he has to write what is weighing on his heart.

“Hopefully, the music doesn’t become this sort of cheesy love fest (now). But I’ve got to be honest about how I feel, and we will see what comes out of that.”

Could this be a Father & Sons type of album from Grimes? We’ve seen records inspired by families done very well, as Luke Combs did earlier this year, so maybe Grimes’ forthcoming album will be more about the early stages of parenting and bringing life into the world. In contrast, Combs was inspired to write his album with both sons being a little older.

While Grimes did not give a date for his next project’s release, I am already excited to hear what he is cooking up. Nothing tugs at the heartstrings more than a father singing about his love for his children. And you have to appreciate an artist writing what they’re living in the moment. There’s just something about knowing that the music coming from a real place that makes it more enjoyable… to me at least.
