Martin Scorsese broke William Wyler’s record for the director with most Oscar nominations in the category of Best Director, which he had held since 1981.
Martin Scorsese is one of the best directors of all time, and this is a word that has not been used lightly. He has had some of the most significant films in the last four decades, having movies such as The Last Temptation of Christ, The Wolf of Wall Street, and The Irishman. The one film that perfectly encompasses his filmography has to be his most recent film, The Killers of the Flower Moon, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio. This movie is significant in more ways than one, with the Oscars having recently announced the nominees for the 2024 Academy Awards.
The filmmaker has received nominations in the category of Best Director and Best Picture. With this film, Scorsese just broke a record that has been standing strong ever since he was first nominated. He has already left behind two of the most significant and respected filmmakers of all time; Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood.
Martin Scorsese Broke An Oscar Record
The Oscars recently announced the nominations for the year 2024, and The Killers of the Flower Moon earned Martin Scorsese nominations for Best Picture and Best Director. Through this, the filmmaker broke the record for most Oscar nominations in the category of Best Director, having ten nominations in this category throughout his career. The previous person to hold this record was William Wyler, who had nine nominations before his passing in 1981.
Interestingly enough, the first time that Scorsese was nominated for an Oscar was the same year as the Ben-Hur director, for his film, Raging Bull. Since then, the filmmaker has a total of fifteen nominations under his belt. These include categories like Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Picture, and of course, Best Director.
Martin Scorsese Leaves Behind Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood
Having broken the record, Martin Scorsese has crossed Steven Spielberg, who has seven nominations in the category of Best Director. This is no small fete, as Spielberg has had far more wins than The Wolf of Wall Street filmmaker, having won three times in his career. he has also been nominated a lot more than Scorsese has, reaching a total of twenty nominations throughout his life after Maestro was nominated for Best Picture.
Clint Eastwood was also no match for the genius and talent of Scorsese, despite many referring to him as the greatest filmmaker of all time. The Million Dollar Baby filmmaker has won the award four times throughout his career. He has been nominated seven times in all categories and had his name featured in the category of Best Director four times, from which he won twice. It is safe to say that Scorsese made history with the release of Killers of the Flower Moon, all the while telling one of the darkest stories to exist.
