Weatherly said, “There will be more DiNozzo someday because he is the one character that felt unfinished… that’s my plan! We shall see…”
The actor played DiNozzo for 13 years before leaving the show in 2016.
Per Hello Magazine, “Michael stepped down from his role in NCIS in 2016, with the season 13 finale marking his final appearance. Speaking about his departure at the time, he said: ‘It came about at the right time. I was burnt out by NCIS and I was ready for a new challenge. Sometimes change is as good as a rest.’”
He told TV Line that he began considering leaving the show after Cote de Pablo, “who played his verbal sparring partner and love interest, Ziva,” left.
“Their great dynamic, the badinage and sparring and flirting between those two characters and how they would swing from siblings to near lovers and back to buddies, that was gone,” Weatherly said. “Then I got to the point where I felt I’d stayed at the party for too long.”
Many fans commented on their excitement for DiNozzo’s possible return.
“Sounds like a great plan to see what Very Special Agent Tony Dinozzo has been up to. Look forward to that day,” one fan tweeted.
“Not only in his personal life but professionally DiNozzo also feels unfinished,” another fan wrote. “He’s so smart, competent, witty and more than capable of leading his own team. I would love to see Tony in very important job position, like he deserves.”
A third fan commented, “Oh I hope so!! Miss you playing #Tony!! Hopefully #Ziva and #Tali will be joining you.”
After his time on NCIS, Weatherly starred in the hit CBS TV series BULL, which ran from 2016 to 2022.
“The series centers around Dr. Jason Bull, a psychologist and expert jury consultant who pilots the Trial Analysis Corporation. This organization assists with jury selection and legal strategy, providing their clients with an edge in the courtroom. The series offers an insightful exploration into the human psyche and the role it plays in the justice system,” BNN Breaking reported.
Movieguide® previously reported on NCIS: ORIGIN, which will dive into Leroy Gibbs’ backstory:
The NCIS saga will continue in the spinoff series NCIS: ORIGINS, which explores the backstory of Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
Along with Gibbs, the series will dive into Mike Franks’ and Special Agent Vera Strickland’s stories.
“Narrated by Mark Harmon, NCIS: ORIGINS begins in 1991, years prior to the events of NCIS. In the new series, Gibbs starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks. (On the mothership series, Franks has been a recurring character played by Muse Watson. Franks was fatally stabbed in Season 8 but continued to appear to Gibbs when he needed a sounding board on hard cases),” Deadline reported.
Harmon is the only confirmed cast member, though he will be returning to the franchise as the series’ narrator, not as Gibbs.
