The first full look at the upcoming prequel series NCIS: Origins has finally been released – and fans are surprisingly impressed.
NCIS fans have been blown away by the first look at the upcoming spin-off NCIS: Origins after previously being underwhelmed by the show’s premise.
The 90s-set prequel will follow the early years of Special Agent in Charge Leroy Jethro Gibbs (originally played by Mark Harmon), with Austin Stowell stepping into his iconic shoes.
He’ll be rubbing shoulders with familiar faces and some new agents in the team, which was then called the NIS.
A newly released trailer teases a darker version of Gibbs who failed his psych evaluation at the start of the first season and dubbed “the definition of crazy”.
Fans will watch the action unfold as the young Gibbs takes his first steps toward becoming the heroic special agent they’ve grown to know and love over the past two decades.
However, Origins has already received its fair share of backlash, with many complaining about CBS’s decision to start yet another new spin-off in favour of the freshly cancelled NCIS: Hawaii.
Despite the controversy, fans couldn’t help applauding the new trailer, which promised a fresh new take on the beloved franchise.
“This looks way better than I thought it would and it has that streaming service quality to it,” one fan said when the trailer was posted on YouTube.
Another added: “Love the darker tone, and incredible visuals/lighting. Very streaming!”
“I thought this was gonna be terrible,” a third admitted. “But this looks amazing.”
And a fourth commented: “WOW, this may be better than I thought it was going to be.
“Listening to the voice over the last line hooked me, the stories I could never tell.”
In the trailer, Gibbs shakes hands with his new colleague Special Agent Benjamin ‘Randy’ Randolf (played by Caleb Martin Foote) who gears him up to “catch some bad guys”.
Meanwhile, ‘Head Secretary in Charge’ Mary Jo Sullivan (Tyla Abercrumbie) greets him on his first day: “Welcome to the nut house, sweetie.”
Fans will also meet NCIS legend Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid) who takes Gibbs under his wing, as well as Gibbs’ father Jackson (Robert Taylor).
Voiceover from Mark himself, who’ll be returning to narrate the series, plays over some of the team’s chilling murder investigations and action-packed field assignments.
“They’re always with you,” he says. “The stories you’ve told. The ones you never could. This is a story I don’t tell.”
NCIS: Origins premieres Monday, October 14 on CBS.
