CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach weighs in on the possibility of NCIS season 22 and NCIS: Hawaii season 4 getting the green light.
The futures of NCIS and NCIS: Hawaii have been given a very positive update. The flagship show, which was originally a spinoff of JAG, follows a division of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and is currently airing season 21. The show has launched its own share of spinoffs set in different locations, including Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Hawaii. Between the main branch of the show and all those spinoffs, the franchise has run for hundreds of episodes and is in fact preparing to air its 1000th episode on April 15.
Deadline recently conducted an interview with CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach. When discussing the possibility of NCIS season 22 and NCIS: Hawaii season 4, she asserted that “NCIS is a cornerstone of our schedule” and that “the writers continue to fire on all cylinders.” However, she didn’t go so far as to confirm that the shows would be renewed, saying that “it’s a little early to officially confirm anything” for the 2024-2025 season. Read her full quote below:
We talked about it a couple months ago, NCIS is a cornerstone of our schedule. The actors love doing it, and the writers continue to fire on all cylinders. As far as the future, we’re thrilled to have them on the air and they want to keep doing it, so we’re going to keep doing it… It’s still only March, and we haven’t made all of our deals and decision-making so it’s a little early to officially confirm anything.
Will NCIS & NCIS: Hawaii Actually Get Future Seasons?
Although Reisenbach seems confident in the abilities of the NCIS cast and crew, this isn’t necessarily a guarantee that every current show in the franchise will get a renewal. Spinoffs of the show have already been canceled after reasonably long runs, so the fate of Hawaii especially remains in question until an official confirmation is announced. Below, see how long every show in the franchise has run so far:
The fact that Los Angeles and New Orleans were both recently cancelled despite long runs may mean that the current shows could be more on the bubble than they might seem. This is especially the case because there are quite a few shows in the franchise that are already set for the 2024-2025 season, including Sydney season 2, the prequel show Origins, and a Tony and Ziva spinoff (which will air on Paramount+ rather than CBS). With so many shows on the docket, there may not be room in the schedule for both NCIS and Hawaii to return.
Ultimately, it seems that the fate of NCIS: Hawaii in particular will be dependent on how its viewership numbers fare through the end of this season. It seems less likely that the flagship NCIS show will be cancelled while so many other spinoffs are running. However, the precedent was set for this possibility when Law & Order was originally cancelled in 2010 despite having spinoffs run for many years afterward, so it will also likely need to pull in solid numbers to assure its future. Reisenbach’s comments seem to indicate that they are holding strong so far, however.
