Though Yellowstone wasn’t the right fit, Tulsa King finally fulfilled Stallone’s lifelong dream of being a cowboy.

Action legend Sylvester Stallone has spent decades thrilling audiences with explosive action films, solidifying his place as a genre icon. But beneath all that, little did people know Stallone dreamt of becoming a cowboy.

Enter Taylor Sheridan, the mind behind the modern phenomenon, Yellowstone and its numerous sequels. Sheridan’s ability to capture the grit and grandeur of the contemporary West resonated deeply with Stallone. Recognizing Sheridan’s talent as the key to unlocking this long-held desire, Stallone desired a collaboration, a chance that he could even trade in his muscles for.

Sylvester Stallone Didn’t Think He’d Be a Good Fit for the Yellowstone lore

Turns out, Sylvester Stallone‘s love for explosions wasn’t his only hidden talent. The action hero secretly yearned to be a cowboy, but finding the right gig was a tough job to pull off. However, Taylor Sheridan was the only man who could make this happen and he did.

Stallone knew Sheridan was the key, and even though he realized the Yellowstone lore wasn’t the perfect fit, fate opened new avenues with a project called Tulsa King. This match-made-in-cowboy-heaven lets Stallone finally ditch the guns for cowboy boots and fulfill his lifelong dream, all while making Sheridan’s day working with a legend. In an interview with Decider magazine, the action hero revealed,

I knew that no one was going to buy me as a just cowboy, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to play. Unbeknownst to me, Taylor was working on this project where this mafioso goes west and steps into that classic fish-out-of-water situation that we all love. When Taylor called and I read the script, I knew that the role of Dwight Manfredi taps into my desire to play that kind of cowboy character.

I’m not supposed to be doing this, but I didn’t get here by following the rules,I’m in court. It’s going to be an interesting scene in Tulsa King. I’m enjoying the process. It’s different. We have to travel about an hour and a half to an old courthouse where I have to appeal my case. I’m my own lawyer, so that could turn out good or bad. Anyway I just wanted to drop [in] and let you know this is looking great. I think it’s a fantastic follow-up to the first season. So see you in Tulsa.
