Clint Eastwood is one of the pillars of Hollywood cinema, and with a career spanning seven decades, he has no plans to stop. The veteran filmmaker celebrates his birthday today, a testament that a fruitful career and passionate mindset prolongs life.
The famed director is known for his works on Western films, though he has also delved into drama, sports action, and even adventure comedy. Some of his best works include Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby, and Dirty Harry.
Clint Eastwood On His Lengthy And Illustrious Career In Cinema
Clint Eastwood is one of the few filmmakers who still grind and toil despite his age. He turns 94 today, but his energy to helm movies remains as vigorous as when he was younger. He shared via Los Angeles Times why he still prefers to work in his 90s.
What the hell am I still working for in my 90s? Are people going to start throwing tomatoes at you? I’ve gotten to the point where I wondered if that was enough, but not to the point where I decided it was. If you roll out a few turkeys, they’ll tell you soon enough.
Eastwood started directing movies late in his career. He was an actor, but he admitted he did not miss it. He shared via The Arizona Republic:
You have more experience as you get older. You have more to draw on, as long as you don’t lose your faculties. You can play on that if you’re lucky enough genetically or you take good enough care of yourself, or a combination of the two. You can go ahead and experiment with things.
He remarked that there are “so many different stories to tell out there.” A person can be 21 or 81 and still do what they are passionate about. He quipped, “If you tell yourself, ‘I’m too old to do that’ — bulls—t. You’re not too old to do anything.”
Eastwood recalled how difficult it was to be an actor, and he understood the struggles of every aspirant, so this is why he “always cast off-types for stuff.”
His approach to directing is also quite unique; he’s known to be very chill on movie sets. He does not waste time and effort shooting several takes, which makes him one of the most efficient directors out there.
Eastwood once told Film Comment, “The objective is to make everything sound like the first time it’s said, so the only thing I can do is try to pick it up the very first time it is said.” Indeed, that’s how brilliant he is as a filmmaker!
