An apple a day keeps the Drew haters away.

Since the Drew and Willow pairing kicked off on General Hospital, it’s safe to say that Drew has become a much-hated person in Port Charles — for both the characters and the viewers. Now, Drew’s portrayer, Cameron Mathison, revealed an unfortunate fan encounter due to the dislike for his character.

From Good Guy To Most Hated Man

During an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show on February 5 — along with co-stars Laura Wright (Carly), Maurice Benard (Sonny), Donnell Turner (Curtis), Tanisha Harper (Jordan), and Finola Hughes (Anna) — Hudson mentioned that Mathison’s character has not been very liked in recent months.

“So, Cameron, I heard your character is like, you know… people got a problem with your character,” Hudson began, elicit ing some laughs. “Is it hard when you go out, and being recognized? What do people do?”

Mathison admitted he’s been so used to typically playing “the good guy,” from GH’s Drew to All My Children’s Ryan to the handsome love interest in Hallmark Channel and Great American Family romcoms. “So, for the last eight months, it’s been quite different from Drew and many times, I’ve heard from people… a lot of aggression.”

Apples to Apples

During the interview, Mathison revealed a specific fan encounter he had that involved a GH fan and an apple. “One time in particular, at a supermarket, somebody recognized me, was like, ‘Very excited to meet you,’ and then quickly shifted,” he explained. “Was like, ‘I hate what Drew Cain’s doing!’ and grabbed an apple and threw it at me from across the produce section.”

The story garnered laughs from his co-stars while Hudson listened in horror, and Wright chimed in, “She threw it with love, right?”

Mathison shared his positive spin on the Drew hate. “The key is that people feel strongly about your character. Whether they like you strongly or don’t like you, it’s a neutral area that you don’t want. So I’ll take it.”
