An adorable Top Gun: Maverick reunion image shows Tom Cruise becoming Glen Powell’s personal wingman. Two years after the success of Top Gun: Maverick, the film remains a strong favorite for a few reasons, including how the majority of its main cast have gone on to star in their own successful projects. Powell, who played Hangman in the Top Gun sequel, has had a particularly interesting past few months. After consecutive hit projects in the romantic comedy Anyone But You and Netflix’s Hit Man, his next endeavor is Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters.

As Powell continues to promote Twisters, Cruise joins him for the London leg of the press tour for an exciting Top Gun: Maverick reunion. Check out the image below:

The photo shows Powell and Cruise posing for the cameras while carrying their respective buckets of popcorn, all ready for the movie. In the caption, Powell cleverly references both Top Gun: Maverick and Twisters, calling Cruise his “wingman” who follows him “into the storm.”

Why Hangman Is Maverick’s Real Successor In The Top Gun Franchise
Miles Teller’s Rooster Wasn’t All That Like Maverick

Unlike Miles Teller’s Rooster, who is the son of Maverick’s late RIO, Goose, Powell’s Hangman is a brand-new character introduced in Top Gun: Maverick. There were theories that he may be Iceman’s son, considering he exuded an attitude reminiscent of Tom Kazansky’s, but that ended up not being the case. The sequel didn’t reveal anything about his origins. Despite not having ties to any of the legacy characters of the Top Gun franchise, Hangman has become a fan favorite because of Powell’s performance, hence why his return in the in-development Top Gun 3 is much-awaited.

Behind the scenes, Cruise and Powell have also struck up a genuine friendship, with the latter also taking a genuine interest in flying like the former did in his earlier years working on the original Top Gun movie.

Despite being initially compared to Iceman, Top Gun: Maverick made it clear that Hangman is more like Maverick’s true successor. Like his former TOPGUN instructor, Powell’s character is a daredevil. He also has a strong sense of loyalty and camaraderie — all qualities that Maverick is known for. Behind the scenes, Cruise and Powell have also struck up a genuine friendship, with the latter also taking a genuine interest in flying like the former did in his earlier years working on the original Top Gun movie. The sequel didn’t develop their relationship, but the threequel hopefully takes advantage of the actors’ chemistry.

At this point, it’s still uncertain when production for Top Gun 3 will be released; Cruise, Powell, and Teller are incredibly busy with other projects. That said, Powell is clearly trying to learn from his new friend and build a Cruise-level movie star career, with Twisters being his first real test headlining a blockbuster. If his Hollywood stock keeps rising, and Cruise keeps showing up to support him, the audience’s desire to see the two reunite on screen will only grow.
