Tulsa King Spinoff Development & New Location Confirmed By Writer

Tulsa King writer Terence Winter confirms development on a new spinoff show in a new location. Created by Taylor Sheridan, who is best known as the mind behind the larger Yellowstone universe of shows, Tulsa King premiered in 2022, following Sylvester Stallone’s Dwight “The General” Manfredi as he leaves prison and begins to build a new criminal empire in Oklahoma. The show was a hit critically and in terms of viewership, and Tulsa King season 2 is poised to premiere on Paramount+ this month.

In a recent interview with THR, Winter confirms that a new Tulsa King spinoff show is in development, and that it will be set in New Orleans, Louisiana. But, he stresses, the series is still in early development, and he’s careful not to reveal any major story or character details. Read Winter’s comment below:

There’s been some talk of that. That’s in the talking stages.

What Tulsa King’s New Spinoff Means For The Show
Is Taylor Sheridan Building A Second Yellowstone-Like Universe?

After premiering in 2018, Yellowstone became a major hit, and the universe of that show has expanded with spinoffs like 1883 and 1932. A new spinoff called The Madison is also in development, and there’s the potential for more shows to come. This confirmation of a Tulsa King spinoff could suggest that the Stallone series could be getting a similar treatment, with more expansions potentially in the works.

At the moment, it’s unclear if any characters from the mothership show will be joining the New Orleans Tulsa King spinoff. In the case of Yellowstone, shows like 1883 and 1923 serve as prequels that flesh out the story of past generations of the Dutton family. It’s not clear if the New Orleans spinoff will be a prequel or if it will take place concurrently with the events of Manfredi’s story. The fact that it’s being referred to as a spinoff suggests it will feature some kind of crossover with the mothership series, potentially with its characters or storylines.

Our Take On The New Orleans Tulsa King Spinoff
There’s One Reason To Be Concerned

Tulsa King season 1 enjoys a score of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience score (now called the Popcornmeter) even higher at 91%. This strong audience response on Rotten Tomatoes is reflected in the show’s viewership, as Tulsa King’s season 1 premiere viewership was the most-watched cable TV premiere of 2022. With such a strong reception to the show, it certainly makes sense to expand the universe and offer a spinoff.

What remains to be seen, however, is whether a spinoff without Stallone can succeed. While nothing has been confirmed, it’s likely that Stallone won’t have a large role (or any role) in the spinoff, and he’s very likely a big part of the appeal of the mothership show. Still, though, if this spinoff succeeds and tells a compelling story, Tulsa King could become a second Yellowstone in terms of its franchise potential.
