There has been centuries of hearsay – talk of hidden bounties and rare historical artifacts buried deep underground in the most isolated parts of Oak Island on the south shore of Nova Scotia, Canada.
Some of the rumors of hidden riches can be traced back to the 18th Century and some of the finds that have been unearthed give treasure hunters hope that the big haul will be discovered at some point.

Such is the interest in uncovering the secrets of Oak Island, that a reality television series, The Curse of Oak Island, launched in 2014. Now into it’s twelfth season on the History Network, it follows Michigan-born brothers Marty and Rick Lagina in their search for the legendary treasure. Their investigations involve gleaning knowledge from locals as well as archaeological experts, chemists, divers, sonar experts…
What objects have Marty and Rick found on Oak Island?
Some of the the objects found so far include a Spanish copper coin, dated 1652 was discovered in Episode 1 of the second series. A rhodolite garnet brooch, a Victorian-era brooch and a lead cross with a square hole at the top from between 1200 and the 17th century.
Other objects were less exciting and even led some viewers to start believing that the program was nothing but a hoax, putting into doubt whether their was ever any buried treasure on the island – or if there was, it was probably long gone.
Some of the dubious items included a “Roman sword” which turned out to be fake, a manuscript which researchers claim “might be from the 12th-Century”, human bone fragments and a piece of sheepskin parchment marked with with illegible text.
Series 12 of The Curse of Oak Island was filmed in November and is currently in production with a release date set for later this year.
