There are a lot of expectations that come with being a celebrity. You gotta maintain your physique, always look the best even when you are about to hop on a 14-hour-long flight, and simply keep your charming self on full display, no matter how bad the weather. When you are someone like Tom Cruise, someone who the entire world looks up to, you just have a little bit more expectations to live up to.

Tom Cruise has always been Hollywood’s dream man, a superstar who makes us all go weak in the knees with a simple smile. However, not everyone realizes the hard work that goes into keeping that smile as radiant as ever. You gotta put your best foot (or tooth) forward even when they literally fall off in front of a guest. Yikes.

Tom Cruise’s Teeth Weren’t Always “Perfect”

Smiles come in all shapes and sizes, making the owners look absolutely beautiful when they flash one. However, the beauty standard sure is obsessed with the idea of a “perfect” smile that every person so desperately wants. Perhaps Tom Cruise thought the same way.

His teeth weren’t perfectly aligned when he started off in Hollywood. His misalignment was joined by chipped teeth and a pronounced overbite which didn’t necessarily fit the beauty standard.

According to reports, his teeth got chipped when he experienced a sports injury thanks to a hockey puck when he was younger. A missing tooth on the upper left side of his jaw causes him to sport a “middle tooth” which makes his dental midline shift to the left.

Fans can get a glimpse of his real teeth in the 1983 film, The Outsiders, where he voluntarily removed his front tooth’s cap for the role of Steve Randle.

Finally, in 2002, Cruise had just about had enough and decided to opt for braces after a dentist appointment for his children. The dentist noticed that his teeth were misaligned and suggested braces, which he wore for a year.

The Time Tom Cruise’s Teeth Embarrassed Him

If you have an embarrassing story to tell from your past, Cruise has one that just might give you enough competition. The superstar of our generation had just moved to New York City with his then-wife Katie Holmes. There, he met with The New York Post’s editor-in-chief and the two decided to have drinks together.

Everything was A-OK during their get-together, that is until Cruise’s front teeth fell out in front of the editor-in-chief, Col Allan. The actor then proceeded to look around for his teeth and popped them back in. Well, that’s a horror story, to say the least. Glad that didn’t happen to him on a date!

Via OK Magazine,

They bought a house in the Village, and they wanted some privacy and they were worried about Page Six. So Tom wanted to have a drink with me, and you know, talk about his expectations…And we’re drinking and talking, and the next thing I know, both of his front teeth fell out onto the table cloth right in front of me.

Allan felt absolutely “speechless” and rightly so.

I mean, this is a face that’s on posters all over the world, good looking guy and there are his front teeth. It was an uncomfortable moment.

Cruise explained to Allan that he was playing with Isabella and Connor, his kids with Nicole Kidman when they accidentally struck him in the mouth and broke his teeth. Ouch.

Needless to say, Cruise didn’t want the incident to reach the masses and he pleaded with Allan to not release the story. He gave him his word and that was that. While he did tell gossip columnist Cindy Adams who was super excited to publish the news, Allan was quick to shut her down saying, “No you can’t do that. I gave Tom my word I wouldn’t do it.” What a gentleman.

Thus, the story didn’t come out until years and years later when Allan revealed it in the fourth episode of the docuseries, Gossip.
