Yellowstone director Christina Voros has explained how Kayce fits into the forthcoming Dutton civil war in season 5 part 2 after staying on the sidelines of his siblings’ conflict for so long. Yellowstone season 5 part 2 will see the conflict between Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Jamie (Wes Bentley) come to a close, while Kayce (Luke Grimes) currently sits on the side, watching his siblings fight. While his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille) has been confirmed to choose Beth’s side of the conflict, it remains unclear where her husband is going to definitively stand.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Voros explained how the Dutton family conflict in Yellowstone season 5 part 2 will force Kayce to embrace his roots as a soldier. The director also acknowledged how the battle has always been about the titular ranch, but hinting at the potential conflict seeing the family come together in order to protect what belongs to them. Check out what Voros had to say below:
Ironically, Kayce is the soldier. Those are his roots. So he is a fitting role to find himself fighting for something. I think Kayce has always been fighting for something. One of the beautiful things about this season is that the narratives of all the characters are really deeply intertwined. From the beginning of the show, the fight has always been for the land. There have been different adversaries who have come and gone, but at the end of the day, it’s always about the family banding together to fight for the land, to fight for the Dutton name.
What Kayce’s Role In His Family’s Conflict Means For Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2
From the very beginning of the show, Kayce has often tried to stay out of the conflicts of other characters in Yellowstone, being the most independent of the children due to his mistrust of John (Kevin Costner). However, with their father now out of the picture, it sounds like he’ll be forced to choose between his siblings, doing what’s best for the Ranch in the long run. While it’s possible he’ll side with Jamie, following his attempt to get their father removed as Governor of Montana, his wife’s influence could turn him to Beth instead.
However, while inner conflict is brewing, Voros also hints the larger influence of keeping the Ranch could lead to a conclusion that most benefits the family as a whole. This could be hinting at Kayce acting as a mediator between his warring siblings, potentially helping them find a middle ground that doesn’t destroy their family’s legacy in the process. However, depending on the events that unfold as their battle commences, he could still be forced to choose between them. This could set the stage for the potential Yellowstone sequel series, or outright end the Dutton storyline once and for all.
Our Take On Kayce’s Involvement In Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2’s Conflict
His Choices Could Decide The Fate Of His Family
Whether he acts as a mediator or actively chooses between his siblings, Kayce’s story could decide what happens to his family’s land moving into the future. While it doesn’t necessarily mean the side he chooses will win Yellowstone’s brewing conflict, it would give them the upper hand in having a better claim over the Ranch. With six episodes left, his role is going to be more important than ever, signifying just how intense the last act of the story is going to be.
