Yellowstone actor Denim Richards has shared how creator Taylor Sheridan ensured he didn’t feel intimidated surrounded by its big stars.
Yellowstone’s Colby Mayfield star talks about how he was made to feel on an equal playing field next to the likes of Kevin Costner and Cole Hauser.
Paramount Network’s Yellowstone is a worldwide hit, not only because of its gripping storylines but also because of its amazing cast.
From The Bodyguard’s Kevin Costner and Good Will Hunting’s Cole Hauser to Sherlock Holmes’ Kelly Reilly, the Western drama is truly a star-studded affair.
While Colby Mayfield actor Denim Richards has an extensive portfolio on stage and screen, he is among the lesser-known actors on the show.
This didn’t matter though as Richards explained how creator Taylor Sheridan ensured no one felt intimidated by their co-stars.
Opening up on Derek Thomas’ Monday Morning podcast, Richards said: “One of the great things about Taylor [Sheridan] is we did this Cowboy Camp, we do them every year but in season one we did the Cowboy Camp and it was a great equaliser, because we’re not doing a show like we’re in the city.
“We’re riding horses and none of us were really good, like we all come from big cities, we’re not riding horses every day, we’re not pushing cattle and all these other things.
“So to come in with an ego wouldn’t really work too much, because we’re all pretty bad at what we do.
“Looking at each other like ‘You guys think we’re going to be able to do this?’
“We were able to bond over the fact how goofy and ridiculous we look.
“I think that was a great equaliser and Taylor, the mastermind that he is, not only with the pen but he knows people and he knows the right buttons to push and the right people that mixes.
“We’re all very odd and strange in our own ways, we all have our own eccentricities but it just works.”
Richards also talked of the special bond that has grown between him and the other Yellowstone stars over the years.
He added: “We all do hang out together, we know each other’s families and we spend time with one another, we play cards and we go to games together.
“So we really do enjoy one another and I think as the show has gone on, we’ve got closer.
“And now when we’re doing those big scenes, whether it’d be with Kelly [Reilly] or Cole [Hauser], it’s literally like a day with your friends.
“That makes it even more of a blessing, because you’re like ‘we’re getting paid to do this, what else could we ask for?’”.
Sadly, the drama will be coming to an end as it has already been confirmed season five will be its final outing.
Tensions between Costner and Sheridan on set have been widely reported and the John Dutton star called time on his part in Yellowstone due to scheduling conflicts with a new movie series he’s directing and starring in called Horizon: An American Saga.
The first part of season five made its debut last year with the second half due to come out in 2024.
