Yellowstone’s Kelly Reilly is quick to insist that she doesn’t know what the back half of Season 5 holds in store for Beth Dutton. “I mean, I know the ending of the show, which I’ve known for six years,” she tells TVLine. “We all knew what the ending would be. We’re going to film that this summer.”
However, the way that Beth’s storyline wraps up on the Paramount Network hit remains a mystery, even to her portrayer. “But what would I hope for her?” Reilly muses. “Peace, I think.”
Given the fact that her character tends to tear through life like a bull in a china shop, does she really think that that’s possible? “As possible as it is for any of us,” she says. “Peace requires some digging and some surrender and letting go of old pains and hurts.
“I certainly believe that she can find that,” she continues. “Whether or not that’s possible, I don’t know. She’s such a warrior, isn’t she? Her reason to be is to protect. Her reason to be is to fight. But I’d like to see that for her.”
Perhaps in the series’ last episodes, Beth will finally show up for herself with the same ferocity that she always has her beloved father. “Yeah!” Reilly says. Although “I question potentially whether happiness is allowed. Over the seasons, we’ve been able to see where it might exist. But she’s taken out of it so quickly. Maybe there’s a future where she’s not sort of yanked out of her happiness.”
Yellowstone Season 5 resumes on Paramount Network in November (with a spinoff to follow). In the meantime, you can catch Reilly in a very different role in Paramount+’s beautifully messy coming-of-age film Little Wing (now streaming).
