But stars Luke Grimes and Kelsey Asbille can confirm this: the finale will shock you to the core, and it all starts within the first minutes of the season premiere.
In an Australian exclusive, the two spoke to 9Entertainment ahead of Yellowstone’s emotional final season – which premieres tonight – as they revealed what to expect following Kevin Costner’s shock absence from the series.
“Page one [of the script], literally. It gets right into it,” said Luke of the moment that most surprised him.
As far as endings go, Luke said fans will be crying “for sure”.
“It’s kind of a gut punch. [Creator] Taylor [Sheridan] really just goes for it,” said Luke, who plays youngest son Kayce Dutton in the series.
“There’s a finality to it and he really leans into the loss and the end – in a beautiful way, though,” he explained.
“It’s going to make you feel all the right things you want to feel in the finale episode of the show you’ve loved for so long.”
With its gripping storylines, explosive twists and unforgettable characters, Yellowstone has cemented itself as one of the most watched series in recent years.
But one star notably not returning for the finale is actor Kevin Costner.
Earlier this year, the Hollywood star revealed that he would not be reprising his role of family patriarch John Dutton.
While a shock to fans, Kelsey (who plays Monica Dutton, Kayce’s wife in the series) revealed it was a move that they had always “anticipated”.
“We always anticipated his absence because so much of the story is about the Dutton legacy and once he’s gone, how will the kids take it on?” she explained.
“So we were prepared for that. But he’s been such an important part of the show and such an iconic character.
“We are so happy for the time we had with him.”
Luke and Kelsey said they were “really excited” for Yellowstone’s final chapters to come out, but admitted it’s been bittersweet.
“It’s a little sad though that this is the last hoorah, this is the last time we’ll all be doing this together so [I’m] kind of processing that at the same time,” Luke said.
“It happened really fast. We started filming the last season and all of sudden it’s the last day and everyone was gone.
“I remember the day we wrapped was very emotional. Driving home that day was very emotional just thinking that’s the last time I’m going to get in my truck and drive home from the Yellowstone set.
“I’ve been doing that for seven years and it’s over now.”
And while fans say prepare to say goodbye to the Dutton family, this won’t be the last you’ll see of both stars.
“I’m excited about the prospect of what could be next,” said Luke which includes spending time with his newborn.
The actor and country music star revealed he will also be releasing a new album.
“That’s a thing now, if you’re a touring country act you’ve got to go to Australia,” he smiled.
“So sure, I’ll be down there sometime soon!”
